Every year around Earth Day I like share some information on an environmental topic.

This year, I’m so excited to share some information on the term biodynamic and Demeter Certified, one of the oldest environmental certifications in the world (http://www.demeter-usa.org).

First, let’s talk about what it means to be biodynamic. I like to explain biodynamic as an organic farming practice that uses integrated and self-sustaining farming practices throughout the entire farm.

A biodynamic farm not only uses organic practices but also incorporates other sustainable methods into their farm such as composting, water conservation, setting aside at least 10% of the farm for biodiversity and applying special blends of compost, herbs and minerals to their crops at specific times of the year.

For a farmer to market their farm or products as biodynamic, they must be certified by an organization called Demeter. Demeter is a European-based organization that has been around since 1928 and is actually one of the most recognized brands in Europe today.

Demeter USA was created in 1985 with a mission “To heal the planet through agriculture.”The entire focus of biodynamic farming is to create the healthiest, most sustainable farms possible. Through this, it is believed we can create the healthiest food to nourish people in the most nutritious way possible.

Demeter is starting to gain momentum in the U.S. The wine industry has been one of the first adopters of the practice but there are many other farms practicing biodynamic agriculture as well. If you shop at Whole Foods, you might have seen some products with the certification.
